Dr. Chafetz's training in adult and geriatric mental health includes:
- Ph.D. in clinical psychology and certificate in gerontology from the University of Florida
- Clinical psychology internship at Duke University Medical Center
- Post-doctoral fellowship in clinical gero-psychology at the Texas Research Institute of Mental Sciences

- is a member of the Dallas Psychological Association (DPA) Texas Psychological Association (TPA), and American Psychological Association (APA).
- has twice been president of the Dallas Psychological Association (DPA), and is the founding director of the Dallas Gero-Psychological Symposium.
- has been a consultant in the care of persons with dementia, such as Alzheimer's disease, at facilities across the country, and served as a gero-psychology faculty at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center for 20 years.
