Midlife crisis
Since the term was coined in the mid-1960's, the public has widely accepted the notion that it is typical for adults in their forties or fifties to tire of their life structure, and therefore take dramatic steps to adopt a new lifestyle, often including more hedonistic or selfish elements.
Psychological research, however, has demonstrated conclusively that this phenomenon is rare (around 10%). The reality is that midlife, or middle age, is generally a period of personality and behavioral stability, accompanied by gradual growth in insight, responsibility, maturity, and acceptance.
