Sleep in middle age

Sleep is a complex neuro-behavioral phenomenon.  Factors affecting sleep in adults can be physical or psychological.  Physical factors may include medication side effects, such diseases as diabetes, depression, and obesity, or typical age changes such as menopause and enlarged prostate.

Psychological factors include a wide range of behaviors we engage in, near and during the time we desire to be asleep.  It is common do discover that adults who complain of poor nighttime sleep actually do a variety of things which actually make it harder to sleep.  These adults have poor sleep hygiene.

Habits which can make it harder to fall asleep at night include:  waking up too late in the morning; napping after 1:00 p.m.; using the bed or the bedroom for activities other than sleep or sex (such as reading, eating, opening mail, watching TV, or talking on the phone); and staying in bed, awake, for too long.

Dr. Chafetz has helped many patients improve their night-time sleep by reviewing and improving their sleep hygiene.
