Adjustment to Retirement
Each person's personal, lifelong journey of psychological development is a magnificent, profoundly meaningful project, worthy of the most epic movie. It has drama, irony, joy, crisis, and shining moments of triumph. We all learn and grow our way through life.
As we approach retirement, our four central tasks are to:
--- know the challenge we face
(to create a fabric of activities and relationships that give meaning to our every day),
--- know ourselves
(our strengths and weaknesses),
--- make a plan
(acquire the skills we need to succeed, and identify our meaningful activities and relationships), and
--- implement our plan
(practice the skills, show up at our activities, participate fully in our relationships).
The life we lead after our fulltime, midlife work career is a life STAGE, one of many. It will be meaningful and fulfilling, if we actively and skillfully learn, experiment, create, and GROW INTO IT.
Dr. Chafetz asks you this question: What are YOU doing after work?
